Spotlight:  Arias, Lieder, and Songs

Embellished Opera Arias, edited by Austin Caswell, presents famous arias from the nineteenth-century repertoire along with the ornamented version from a contemporary source. The song literature published by A-R Editions contains a generous selection of American music, including collections of music by Benjamin Carr and Charles Loeffler, and the Early Songs, 1907Ð1914 of Irving Berlin, edited by Charles Hamm. Another volume contains the Collected Songs of the late nineteenth-century team of Edward Harrigan and David Braham, edited by Jon W. Finson.

With lieder, two separate volumes are devoted to settings of Goethe and Eichendorff, and they offer a comparative approach to the more standard literature. The music is by both famous and lesser-known composers. In a similar way, the volume of Famous Poets Neglected Composers: Songs to Lyrics by Goethe Heine, Mšrike, and Others, edited by J. S. Smeed, sheds light on the excellent work of a number of relatively unfamiliar Lieder composers.

In addition, Israeli Folk Music: Songs of the Early Pioneers, edited by Hans Nathan, is a unique collection of settings of traditional Jewish folk music by a number of famous composers from the early part of the twentieth century. The composers represented include Kurt Weill, Aaron Copland, and Darius Milhaud. In addition to his foreword to this edition, Philip Bohlman has contributed an afterword that provides additional background on the music and an analysis of the settings.
