Spotlight on:
Selected Chamber Music for Strings
Recent Researches publications include a number of examples of fine chamber
music, including many works for strings. In addition to string quartets
and quintets, the ensembles involve various combinations of winds, and
also historic arrangements of works of orchestral music. Those who would
like to augment to the repertoire of their string quartet or other chamber
groups should consider the music found in these volumes. Parts have been
published for most of these volumes and are still available.
These editions include music by some renowned composers, including the
Quartet for Strings (In One Movement), Opus
89, by Amy Beach, and the String Quartets,
Opus 32 and 33 of Leopold Kozeluch. Likewise, the pieces in the collection
of Four Viennese String Quintets are
fine examples of chamber music from the late eighteenth century. The latter
volume is of interest for its focus on composers who flourished at the
time of Mozart.
Among our recent publications is The
Unfinished Chamber Music by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. This
edition includes all that exists of his String Quartet in F Major, Piano
Trio Movement in C Minor, and his Piano Quintet Movement in B-flat Major.
Another new volume contains Hummel’s arrangements
for chamber ensemble of overtures by nineteenth-century composers.
Through arrangements like this orchestral works became better known, and
the music became part of private music-making. As recital material, these
arrangements not only offer a fresh approach to familiar music, but also
include nineteenth-century pieces that have since fallen out of the repertoire.
