The Anthology of Early American Anthems presents in two volumes 52 anthems and anthem-like compositions by 45 American composers of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries.  In context, the anthem represents the largest, most complex, and most serious form in psalmody, the religious music of British and American churches of the time.  This edition is a survey of early American composers of this repertory, and it makes the music available in a critical edition for performance and study.

Volume 1 contains music for major church festivals: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Fast Day; volume 2 comprises anthems for specific events, such as the dedication of a church, the ordination of a minister, funerals, charity meetings and marriage.  Also included in volume 2 are 15 anthems whose use is undesignated, and which could serve any number of occasions.  All the anthems are typical of their times and represent some of the best music of their composers.
