La gara degli Dei and Diana su l’Elba are two serenatas that Johann David Heinichen composed for the famous celebration of the wedding of the German prince Friedrich August III and the Austrian archduchess Maria Josepha in September 1719. The music contains features found in Venetian music of the day, which was popular at the Dresden court. La gara degli Dei includes an aria for tenor with the accompaniment of the theorbo and horn, and also a sonata for solo violin, solo oboe, and orchestra. This work served as a prelude to a fireworks display along the banks of the Elba. Diana su l’Elba was performed on a ship in the Elba to inaugurate one of the hunts that took place in September 1719. Both works demonstrate Heinichen’s brilliant and sometimes spectacular style of composition at the time he was emerging as the leading composer at the Dresden court.
