Myslivecek, known in Italy as "il divino boemo," was most active as a successful composer of Italian opera. He also wrote a number of instrumental works, and some of his chamber music appeared in print in Paris and London. Although his ten violin concertos remained unpublished, and the limited number of surviving manuscripts indicates that they were not widely known, the quality of these works places them among the most attractive of the time. One of the three concertos presented here, based on a manuscript in Prague, probably dates from the early 1760s. The other two, edited from rare manuscripts in score in Vienna, probably date from somewhat later, possible from Myslivecek's visit to Munich and Vienna in 1772. These examples from the neglected repertory of the early Classical violin concerto amply justify Mozart's admiration for their composer. Contents Parts |
