Relatively few works for violoncello and basso from the second half of the
eighteenth century have been published in reliable critical editions. Although
there is much information about contemporary cello technique in treatises
of the period, until now little of this music has been available for study
by performers and scholars. This edition of nine sonatas by Carlo Graziani
partially fill that void. The works represent a cross-section of Graziani's
musical style and approach to the cello. The composer himself, a virtuoso
cellist, could perform the sonatas and demonstrate his skill. But these
sonatas are also excellent pedagogical works, and many of them were written
for his patron and pupil, Friedrich Wilhelm II (r. 1786-97). Of special
interest are the added fingerings in the cello parts, which illustrate how
an advanced cello student might approach a difficult passage.
