Recent Researches in the Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries

[Photo of Rufus Hallmark] ISSN 0193-5364
Rufus Hallmark, general editor

This series covers a period during which music publishing became widespread. In contrast to some of the other Recent Researches series, Recent Researches in the Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries brings out music that may once have appeared in print but that is no longer available or well known—a Méhul symphony, a Hummel concerto, piano works by Dussek and Hensel, chamber music by Walter Rabl. The series also presents music that, though known and performed, stands in need of a critical and revised edition—as with the organ symphonies of Widor—or of new insights into performance practice—as occurs with opera aria embellishments.

One feature of the series is its collections devoted to a single genre. The series contains several anthologies of lieder by various neglected composers on texts by Eichendorff, Goethe, Heine, Mörike, and other poets. In addition, the nature of the series allows the editor of a volume to publish in it an extensive repertoire—such as works by Beethoven's student Archduke Rudolph or the anthology of piano ballades—as a companion to a musicological monograph on the subject. It is hoped that other scholars will explore this possibility, considering genre and other organizing principles (e.g., the music of a particular milieu) as a basis for edition and studies.
