Recent Researches in the Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth CenturiesJan Ladislav DussekSelected Piano Works Edited by H. Allen Craw
Highly acclaimed as one of the early concert pianists, Dussek's brilliant piano music has been unjustifiably neglected for many years--an oversight corrected in part with this publication. The C major sonata, in particular, displays masterful handling of musical materials, ranges widely harmonically, and makes effective use of piano sonorities. The Fantasie and Fugue prefigures Liszt, to some extent, in its figuration and harmonic motion. Op. 71 is a set of variations on six themes, mainly drawn from opera. Displaying a remarkable freedom of ideas and musical treatment, the Fantasie in F Major is one of Dussek's more interesting and effective works.
