This edition of representative sacred works by Vivanco substantially widens our view of the Renaissance in Spain. Two of the three masses presented here (Missa O quam suavis es and Missa Beata Maria Virgine in Sabbato) contain striking examples of contrapuntal virtuosity with a complexity of style rare in the late sixteenth century. The Missa Sexti toni, on the other hand, presents a contrast in its harmonic clarity and simpler melodic style. |
