Mattheus Le Maistre was appointed to the position of Kapellmeister at the Protestant electoral court in Dresden in 1554. Two of his most important subsequent publications, the Catechesis (1559) and the Geistliche Gesange (1557), contain tricinia that he wrote for the choirboys in his charge. Although Le Maistre tailored the technical demands of these Latin and German songs and chorale settings to conform to the limited vocal capabilities of the young boys, within that limitation they present an imaginative variety of musical style and compositional invention.
