Recent Researches in the Music of the Renaissance

Juan Vasquez's 1551 publication of villancicos, surviving in a unique and heretofore inaccessible print, contains 22 villancicos à 3, five villancicos à 4, and two canciones à 5. Although Vasquez enjoyed a well-deserved popularity in the Spanish courts during his lifetime, he has been neglected since. The works in this collection amply justify his contemporaneous renown. They range from sprightly settings of folklike tunes and poetry to serious compositions which display outstanding contrapuntal skill and sensitivity.
