This third and last of the Passion settings--the Passion according to St. John--by Handel's great rival at Hamburg is the only extant oratorio in Mattheson's autograph. Cannon's edition of this major work is prepared from the single surviving photostatic copy of the manuscript, which was destroyed during World War II.
