Collegium Musicum: Yale UniversityFelix Mendelssohn BartholdyO Haupt Voll Blut und Wunden Edited by R. Larry Todd
Between 1827 and 1832, Mendelssohn composed a series of cantatas, several of which remain in manuscript today. O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, published here for the first time in a critical full score, was composed in 1830, roughly a year after Mendelssohn's celebrated revival of the St. Matthew Passion. Mendelssohn's homage to Bach is obvious from the style of this cantata and its use of the chorale melody that occurs frequently in the St. Matthew Passion. |
