We bid a fond farewell and offer heartfelt thanks to Rufus Hallmark for his many years of counsel and collaboration as series editor for Recent Researches in the Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries.
After serving for over 36 years as the series editor, Rufus Hallmark is stepping down from the position. Hallmark, professor emeritus at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has overseen the series of critical music editions since 1983. Through the 73 volumes issued during his editorship, he has shaped the series to reflect the many genres and styles of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The series contains works by composers of many nationalities, both famous ones and lesser lights.
"It has been a pleasure and honor to work with the A-R Editions staff and with the other distinguished editors on this admirable publication series," says Hallmark.
A-R Editions will be ever grateful for the many years of wisdom and guidance that Professor Hallmark has provided us through his long editorship, and we wish him the best in his retirement.
Stepping into the role of series editor is Francesca Brittan, Associate Professor of Music at Case Western University. Her research interests span the eighteenth through twentieth centuries and include sonic histories of medicine; intersections between music, magic, and supernaturalism; orchestral and conducting cultures; and French musical aesthetics from romanticism to modernism. She is the author of Music and Fantasy in the Age of Berlioz (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and has published in a wide range of scholarly venues, including the Journal of the American Musicological Society, 19th-Century Music, Music and Letters, Nineteenth-Century Music Review, and the Journal of Popular Music Studies. Brittan is also active as fortepianist and teacher of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century performance practices. She is particularly interested in romantic melodrama and related traditions of declamation and, in recent years, has given a series of performances showcasing this material in Europe and North America. Her edition of Jean-Etienne Soubre’s Sinfonie fantastique was published by A-R in 2017.
Brittan says, “I am delighted to join the editorial team at A-R and look forward to fostering innovative editing projects. In particular, I will welcome submissions bringing to light marginalized, suppressed, or hitherto unknown compositional voices in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.”
