These two volumes of etudes, virtually unknown until now, are of considerable importance in the history of violin literature. The Caprices & Airs variés, first published in 1787, is the earliest collection of violin etudes to be printed. The Cinquante études, which appeared around 1800, are also caprices and varied airs designed as study material.
