This edition of the anthems of John Goss (1800–1880) includes a large number of works that have been unavailable beyond their initial nineteenth-century printing. The anthems range from short works in hymnbook format to expansive anthems in choral score frequently employing verse and solo sections. Goss’s music entered British consciousness on a national level with the inclusion of two choral works at Wellington’s funeral (one of which was fully orchestrated and is included in this edition), and after this point his music featured on numerous occasions of national importance. There is a lyrical elegance to Goss’s writing, coupled with a compositional integrity that few mastered so consistently, that places his output in a special category within the lineage of English cathedral music. Whether the works are one-page miniatures, or substantial pieces of multiple pages, the understanding of prosody, especially in relation to sacred texts, is notably accomplished. Today his works afford performers fine setting of texts that are easily applicable to liturgies of our own time, whether large or small, across multiple denominations.
Almighty and merciful God
And the King said to all the people
Behold! I bring you good tidings
Blessed is the man
Brother, thou art gone before us
Christ our passover
Come, and let us return unto the Lord
Fear not, O land, be glad and rejoice
Forsake me not
The glory of the Lord
God so loved the world
Have mercy upon me, O God
Hear, O Lord
I am the resurrection and the life
I heard a voice from heaven
I will magnify thee, O God
If we believe that Jesus died
In Christ dwelleth
Let the wicked forsake his way
Lift up thine eyes round about
The Lord is my strength
Lord, let me know mine end
Man that is born of a woman
O give thanks unto the Lord
O Lord God, thou strength of my health
O Lord, thou art my God
O praise the Lord
O praise the Lord of heaven
O Saviour of the world
O taste, and see, how gracious the Lord is
Praise the Lord, O my soul
The Queen shall rejoice
Requiem aeternam
The souls of the righteous / Requiem aeternam
Stand up and bless the Lord your God
There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun
These are they which follow the Lamb
The wilderness
Short Hymnbook Anthems
Almighty and everlasting God
Christ is risen
Enter not into judgment
Hosanna; For unto us
Let thy merciful ear
My voice shalt thou hear
Praise waiteth for thee
Wherewithal shall a young man
