The poet Joseph Eichendorff (1788–1857) was a major figure of German literary romanticism, and hundreds of composers were attracted to his lyric texts. This edition presents a selection of twenty Eichendorff songs illustrating the development of the lied during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Seventeen composers are represented, including Fanny Hensel, Robert Franz, Joseph Rheinberger, Philipp Spitta, Hans Pfitzner, and Othmar Schoeck.
