This edition makes available the ten extant art songs of John Knowles Paine (1839–1906), along with six partsongs for men's voices and an anthem for male chorus and organ. Three of the songs and four of the partsongs are published for the first time; all have been unavailable for many decades. In the songs, all from Paine's middle period, one notices the craftsmanship, individuality, and musical effectiveness characteristic of his better-known works. The music for men's voices dates from the Civil War era, when he was actively involved with Harvard choirs. These works are attractive, varied pieces, showing a definite skill in writing effectively for men's voices.
