This edition presents Ottorino Respighi's first work for violin and piano. The Sonata in D Minor—written in three movements in a light salon style and filled with drama, youthful exuberance, lyricism, and Schumannesque intimacy—was composed in 1897, twenty years before his more well-known Violin Sonata in B Minor. Violin and piano were the primary instruments in Respighi's musical education, and his entire output displays his in-depth understanding of the expressive and technical capabilities of both instruments.
I. Lento—Allegro
II. Adagio
III. Scherzo: Allegretto
